This week we’re giving fruit beers a try — And I found not one, but two of them to sample!
Now, I think the prevailing attitude is that “fruit beers” are “girly beers” and many people turn their noses up at them. BUT fruit beers are freaking delicious, when done right. I remember trying a strawberry wheat something in Belgium and loving it. I’m also a big fan of Sam Adams’ cherry wheat (Husband is not, which means…more for me!) and then there’s Ballast Point’s relatively new Grapefruit Sculpin which is…very worth the extra few bucks for a six-pack. I was tempted to just grab one of those this week and call it a day, but instead, I took a tip from Mariah and scooted over to Clem’s bottle shop in Kensington and oh my God it’s like beer nirvana over there and found a couple new-to-me fruit beers to sample.
Boysenbeery (6.5% ABV)
This is from Invercargill Brewery in New Zealand. I don’t think I’ve ever had New Zealand beer before. I know I’ve had NZ wine, but to my knowledge, never beer. The label obviously caught my eye and I had to give it a shot.
Color/appearance: As it poured, it looked like tea. Once in the glass, it resembled cola. I think. The label says it’s a “dark red brew” so maybe the lighting is just really bad in my apartment (what else is new?).
Aroma: Man, I could smell the berries when it was still an arm’s length away. Very berries-ish, obviously. I also think I picked up a tiny bit of malts. Not sure.
Taste: Honestly…it was kinda like a carbonated berry-flavored Snapple, with a teeny bit of a kick. It was very sweet and almost tart on the finish, with a crisp mouthfeel.
Overall: Very decent, but probably not something I’d pick again most nights.
Aprihop (7% ABV)
I’ve had mixed experiences with Dogfish Head before. Mainly, I’m not a fan of the 60- or 90-Minute IPAs. But this is a regular IPA…brewed with apricots. Which I don’t think I’ve seen before — most fruit beers are brewed with either berries or citrus, as far as I’ve seen.
Color/appearance: Light brown/amber, with a light-colored head.
Aroma: I didn’t pick up much apricot, but my first thought when I sniffed this was “It smells like summer.”
Taste: Again, I didn’t pick up a strong apricot flavor, but there was definitely a good deal of fruit sweetness, with just a light hop character too.
Overall: Man, this was absolutely delicious. I’d get it again in a heartbeat.
