Into the Pint Glass: Mead

Into the Pint Glass: Meadfeatured

GUYS. It’s the last Into the Pint Glass link-up. I’m late as usual (dragging it out for our awesome hosts, Mariah and Katie, you’re welcome guys). For this last round, we’re venturing outside of beer again to sample some mead.

Into the Pint Glass: Mead {the ponytail diaries}

I don’t…think…I’ve ever had mead. I’m seriously sitting here trying to remember if I ever drank it in Denmark (that’s the only time/place I can think of where I might have had the chance). I think someone might’ve bought a bottle one night and shared some. I seem to remember a big, intimidating-looking bottle with a viking on the label. I don’t know. I may be making all that up.

So! I grabbed a bottle and…here goes.

Into the Pint Glass: Moonlight Meadery Kurt's Apple Pie {the ponytail diaries}

Moonlight Meadery Kurt’s Apple Pie (14% ABV)

Color/appearance: It was a lovely honey gold. There were some verrry small bubbles, but they weren’t rising like in a carbonated beverage or champagne.

By the way, the guy at Bine & Vine, where I bought this, told me to drink it from a champagne flute at room temp. Thank god, or I probably would’ve chilled it and poured it into a pint glass. #amateur

Aroma: Honey and fruity. Kinda like a really sweet apple cider.

Taste: I was pleasantly surprised! From the aroma, I thought it would be way sweet, almost syrupy. But while the mouthfeel was a bit thick — kinda like port, almost — it was more tart, like apple cider, with those delicious apple pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and just a hint a vanilla.

Overall: I liked this more than I expected, but the sweetness was still there and its higher ABV means I can’t really enjoy more than a small sample at a time.

By the way, just because Into the Pint Glass will no longer give me an excuse to spend way too much time browsing the bottle shops every couple weeks, I intend to keep blogging about beer, breweries, and homebrewing on my own. For one, SD Beer Week is approaching (AKA the Greatest Week of the Year), Husband and I have big plans for our little homebrewing operation, and I’m learning more and more about the business side of craft beer and find that fascinating, so I’ll have plenty to share. In the meantime, I started using Untappd to track the new/interesting beers that I try. If you use that to and want to find me on there, I’m AlliKay.

Ever tried mead? What did you think?
